Origin & Scientific Facts

The name Nkejje comes from the Luganda language of Uganda and traditionally refers to small, dried edible fish from Lake Victoria. Unlike the sardine-like mukene ( Rastrineobola argentea , family Cyprinidae), which are also caught in Lake Victoria, Enkejje are typically somewhat larger fish, also known for their high nutritional value. However, other species are also called Nkejje .

The region also has its own names in other languages: in the Luo language they are called Fulu , in Swahili they are called Furu .

For generations, enkejje have played an important role in the diet and culture of the people living along Lake Victoria. Harvested using traditional methods and gently dried in the sun , their flavor and nutrients are optimally preserved. This creates a natural product that is equally valued for the local market and for creative applications outside of Africa.
